One of our biggest passions at Potters of Buxton is working with brands that have a rich heritage and undeniable personality. Some brands are so distinctive in this and their offering that they become iconic - French brand Armor Lux undoubtedly falls into this category.
Founded in 1938 the company was founded in Finistère in Quimper by Walter Hubacher, a Swiss engineer with a fierce entrepreneurial spirit. Originally the company was called Bonneterie d'Armor" and specialised in lingerie and underwear. The preceding War years put a halt to the factories activities, but it didn’t stunt Walter’s belief in the company. In 1947 he built a workshop for 50 employees and owing to his love of Brittany and the sea the company was re-named Armor Lux (Armor: the sea, lux: light) and, for the first time, expanded to ‘ready to wear’ clothing.
The brand had become synonymous with the iconic Breton stripe whilst crafting their collections from purely natural materials such as wool and cotton in order to maintain their absolute commitment to quality that their company was founded on. By the 1980s, the Armor Lux company had grown to 600 employees. Now, the whole family could be dressed in their clothes, whether it be coats, nautical sweatshirts, jackets or the statement Breton striped top.
In the early 90's, Walter Hubacher crossed paths with two childhood friends, Jean-Guy Le Floch and Michel Guéguen, who bought the company from him. These Finisterian friends understood the essence of Armor Lux so sought to develop the brand, the ready-to-wear collections and the network of boutiques while maintaining the exceptional expertise of the many employees that craft the collections from inception to production to the shop floor.
Today, the brand is as iconic as ever but with its eye constantly fixed on keeping contemporary and fresh their collections can be viewed as the ultimate modern classic.
